There are two reasons why you’re looking for costumes in the middle of February. One is that you really love Halloween, and the other is that you have a costume party you have to show up to, but you don’t have the cash for a new look. The last scenario is that a con is coming up and you’re still in a relatively broke situation. If you find yourself in these problems, then there are still some budget ideas you can turn to in order to, so with that thought in mind, check out these top 10 cheap costume ideas.
10. 50’s Nerd
There was never a time that Nerds were more identifiable than it was in the 50’s. The coke bottle glass installed into what is now known is “Hipster” frames and the suspenders make this costume easy to achieve. You can make this up to date by using a shirt with a really obscure, show, game, or movie tacked on it.
9. Kiddy Superheroes but for Women
This costume is a little bit more for the ladies, or for dudes that are really confident. Basically, instead of buying a full costume, you purchase one in a child’s size. Make sure it still fits you, at least not being too tight around your chest. If you need some adjustments done, go ahead and do them.
8. Jack Donaghy and Liz Lemon (30 Rock)
This is a great couples costume, and for TV nerds, you should get a huge kick out of it. Just make sure to get a really high class suit, or at least one that looks like it. Tack on a coiffed hair and a glass filled with scotch, or Iced Tea. For the ladies, have a blazer, jeans, a cardigan and a funky pair of shoes to make the suit clash. Be sure to give bonus points for those thick frame glasses.
7. A Sim (The Sims)
The Sims video game is a pretty big series and there are tons of people that recognize the little people in the game. At the same time, it is amazingly easy to make this costume; just make a green cardboard diamond, roughly half the size of your head, and prop it up so that it floats over your head.
6. Rock, Paper, Scissors
This iconic game literally crosses borders in culture, so why not use it as an awesome costume? You’ll need at least 3 people in this act to make it work, since there are 3 objects in this game. Once in the party, you can play the game all night long as you three would probably be bumping into each other anyway.
5. Pirate
There is always at least one pirate in every party, with varying quality in terms of the costume. It could range from a frilly blouse, coupled with a leather vest and an eye patch, to full on Captain Jack Sparrow accuracy. However, in order to save yourself some cash, you’ll have to opt for the former.
4. Creepy Parent with Baby Ventriloquist Doll
You like scaring people with the movie Chuckie? If so, then you’ll love this costume that borders of demon summoning. The parts are easy enough to find because a suit, a wig, and some black face paint are all you’ll need. Just dress up your kid, fix the wig, and trail some lines on the edges of your child’s mouth down to the chin.
3. Mime
Yet another party staple, the mime is supposed to be the cheapest costume here. However, if you can splurge a bit of cash, then you make it fancier. Basically, you’ll need black and white face paint. Some black and white clothes, and a beret just to complete the illusion. Google some images if you don’t know what they look like, and just use that as a template for when you’re making the look.
2. Error 404: Costume not Found
Possibly the cheapest and laziest costume on this list, Error 404 is exactly what it means. You don’t have a costume or it won’t load, whichever excuse you have, all you’ll need is a marker and a white t-shirt. There is a lot of inherent humor in this costume, but it’s also sort of apathetic, so use it at your own risk.
1. Rorschach
Watchmen is an iconic film, and an even bigger graphic novel. There’s also a character that has an awesome costume, and his name is Rorschach. His mask is not as hard to achieve as most people think, and it’s also extremely cheap. For this to work, you just have to order in some thermal dust, pick up a white skintight mask, and some clear glue. Mix the dust and the glue together until they it is black and gooey. Make the pattern as creatively as you want, apply it on the mask, and let it dry. Test it out and find out if your mask works.
